EVERY DONATION COUNTS

Where would you be without an education?

It’s hard to imagine making it through life without a proper education. And yet, there are children in Kenya, Africa that will never experience the same “luxuries” that you have. But, you can help!

A small donation to the Soweto Academy helps to educate, feed, and clothe children in Kenya, Africa. Your donation helps to keep the Soweto Academy operation. Right now, it takes about $10,000 per month to help provide these resources to these children.

The Soweto Academy

The Soweto Academy was founded by Chrispinus Okumu in 1988. The academy is located in the heart of the Kibera slums and these slums are considered to be the second-largest slum in the entire world. The Kibera slums are so extreme that there are well over 100,000 children that are orphaned here. The children range in age, and they can be anywhere between the 1st grade all the way up to the 12th.

The Soweto Academy has around 500 students that attend class there!

There are two main buildings that make up the Soweto Academy. Each building is three stories and they house much more than just the Soweto Academy. One of the buildings includes the dormitories of the attending students and the other contains all of the different classrooms where the students go. There is also a kitchen, a volleyball court, and a basketball court. Every student that attends the Soweto Academy has to go through an orientation process that involves a visit to the student’s homes.

This home visit is to establish whether or not the student has adequate living conditions or has to live in dormitory housing. A lot of students are required to live in the dorms because of poor conditions. The teachers that have dedicated their time to the Soweto Academy are experts in their field and they love teaching the students valuable life lessons. In total, there are 27 different certified teachers, whose pay ranges from $150 to $200 a month depending on their education and certifications.

Since the Soweto Academy has opened its doors in 1988, there have been, on average around 50 students that have graduated each year. The students and the faculty both take pride in their volleyball team. The team name is the Mighty Minnows, and in the last championship, the team took 2nd place. The school is in desperate need of a sponsor for the Mighty Minnows, and the team needs new uniforms, new equipment, help with tournament costs and transportation, and many other things.

We Need Your Help

In fact, the Soweto Academy needs a little more help than just the uniforms and other equipment; they need:

  • Back Taxes: We are behind roughly $10K and cannot get new accounts for the water business until the taxes are paid.
  • Teacher Pay and Food: We are behind on paying teachers and for food received that has not been paid for. We need roughly $10K for last month and $10K for this month.
  • Future Budget: Our projected budget for the coming months is $15K per month for food, and teacher salaries.
We estimate that we needed at least $30K to keep running.

Where we live, education is expected – where they live, education is an amenity. Without your help, we may have to shut our doors completely.

Can you help us out?

The Soweto Academy Mission

Soweto Academy is a school in Nairobi, Kenya in the Kibera slums. Soweto Academy has been educating, feeding, and clothing 500 children for over 30 years. This school is in desperate need of funds to continue keeping the school open.Soweto Academy is the only source of food, clothing, education, and shelter for these 500 children who come from the Kibera slum. It takes a minimum of $10,000 per month to feed, clothe, pay teachers, and pay bills such as electricity.

Through gifts and offerings over the last 30 years, the leaders of the school and supporters throughout the whole world have managed to build school buildings. They also built a dormitory, literally “brick by brick”, for 100 of the girls that are most vulnerable.

In the past, local friends and churches and others in the United States have supported this cause. Funding has dramatically decreased in the last year and they are in dire need of funding so the school can remain open.

Soweto Academy is a school for children, ages 1-18 years old. Some of these children have no parents due to sickness, AIDS, malaria, and typhoid.

We believe that many of you that will read their story will know the hardships and day to day struggle to simply live.

Their cause is to educate a new generation in Kenya that will evoke change in every way of life. The school is the only way for these kids to get out of poverty and into a better way of life, and to become the leaders of tomorrow. Kibera is the 2nd largest slum in the world with absolutely no opportunities given to them outside of education.

Because of decreased funds, there is an emergency for food. If you can contribute today, it will save the lives of these children.

Any amount will make a difference. If you can give a large amount, that would be appreciated. If you can give $20, that would be appreciated. Any amount will help these kids today. Together, we can make sure a new generation of educated children can become the leaders of tomorrow in Kenya and in the world.
